Painful breastfeeding? Gassy baby? Get full evaluation of tongue function! Many times after providers assist breastfeeding moms, there is still no resolution and mom is suffering and stressed eventually giving up on breastfeeding. Please know not all providers are looking at function of the tongue specifically. This is key to resolving many latching challenges that affect the mom and baby dyad. Specialized providers are very beneficial in helping moms breast feed successfully, I support these providers and their profession. However as an Orofacial Myofunctional Specialist I evaluate specific functions of muscles around the face, cheeks, neck, that make a successful suck swallow breathe. This is critical to have a successful expe...

It is all about airway! Oxygen is our lifeline, we can only last a few seconds without it. As a dental professional what do I see or ask me as a myofunctional specialist and I can tell you more! As a dental hygienist I would see stained teeth, demineralization, and rotated teeth (#g left lateral is shifted lingually-distal). Now as a myofunctional specialist I would see this and ask mom right away, how does this child sleep? Night terrors? Hard time getting to bed? Restless sleeper? Snoring? Wake up during night? Bed wetting? Is the child tired during the day? Lack of focus in school? Hyperactive or behavior outburst? Why would I ask all these questions, because look at the back of the mouth, the airway is blocked BIG TIME by en...

Most parents don't even realize their children are mouth breathing. When I ask parents if their child breathes through their nose or mouth they usually say nose. Until I point out they have their lips apart when they are playing with toys across the room.  Parents are unaware if their child's lips are closed or open. I didn't realize my son looked like this picture, but now looking back this was how he looked in many photos. No wonder he was snoring at night and had sleep disorder breathing. Every person has a different situation that will drop the tongue low in the mouth. Actually lets back up. Where is your tongue now? Look at your child, do they look this picture or are their lips closed? Where the tongue is positioned at res...

Crooked teeth, crowded teeth, teeth that have shifted as an adult? Have you had braces and now your teeth have changed, relapsed back to how they were before braces? What is the cause? Even wearing a retainer the teeth shift, what is happening? The mighty forces of nature are having the same effects as braces. Braces align teeth with small, constant pressure manipulated by an orthodontist gets beautiful results. However, what caused the teeth to be crowded, crooked in the first place? Muscles engaging during a swallow will put small, constant pressure on teeth and force them shift also. Swallowing happens 400-500 times a day, something we do without thinking. However when our swallowing pattern has evolved and engages...

How can myofunctional therapy work for my little ones? My programs are designed specifically for each individual client needs. My clients age from newborn to mature adult. Any age benefits from myofunctional therapy, especially during development years. Why do providers want to post pone tongue ties and myofunctional therapy until older? Because they are not comfortable working with that age! Get the help your youngster needs by a qualified experienced provider, like myself, that is comfortable working with children. How does it make sense for a 2 year old whose cranial structure is developing, teeth erupting, to not have their tongue restriction corrected? Why wait until the bones have calcified and developed and have expensive...

Dry chapped lips are a nuisance to have. What is the cause of dry lips? Mouth Breathing, even having your lips apart just slightly allows oxygen to transfer through your mouth instead of your nose. There are other health conditions that correspond with dry lips and it come back to orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD). Basically your facial muscles are not engaging correctly and when your body compensates for these variations other medical conditions arise. Like dry mouth which alters the oral biome. Oral bacteria adapt to the dryer environment and tend to become more virulent.  Are pacifier bad for your child? As a parent you determine what is best for your child. Use of a pacifier increases myofunctional disorders as they grow and develop their muscular and skeletal patterns. Costly orthodontic treatment as well will be in the future. The sucking motion developed by pacifier use initiates a life long pattern as muscle and skeletal development begins. The long term use of a pacifier depends on the length of time spent in the child's mouth and the intensity of the sucking when it's in their mouth. If a child uses it short term, few minutes no big deal. But when the child is constantly given the pacifier as a distraction to constantly calm and soothe the child their will be oral disorders....

It is always personal, your interest, getting healthy, or for your children! My son is the reason I became an orofacial myofunctional therapist. Dr William Hang discussed airway issues, snoring, mouth breathing, drinking loudly, texture food aversions, it was as if he was describing my son. Now I see it as I look back at his pictures as an infant. Low tongue position, in many pictures!

He never had trouble latching or being breast fed. No tethered oral tissue, no lip or tongue ties. His tongue preferred resting position low in his mouth.

As a dental hygienist never did I look at the tongue, cheek, and lips as I do now!

Every single patient I see I am evaluating for tongue position at rest, swallowing, oral habits, snoring, healthy...
